Beijing, capital of the People's Republic of China, is a city of history and culture. Although some of the city's old buildings have disappeared, Beijing's historical sites, reminiscent of people who lived here and events that occurred, remain. The capital's architectural monuments are, most famously, that colossal military installation the Great Wall; the Forbidden City, largest and best preserved imperial building complex in China; imperial resorts the Summer Palace and Beihai Park; the magnificent Temple of Heaven sacrificial compound; Yonghegong Lamasery, imperial temple of Tibetan Buddhism; and the Ming Tombs, where 13 Ming emperors are buried. Of these and Beijing's many other places of scenic and historic interest, the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Ming Tombs and the Peking man site at Zhoukoudian have been designated world cultural heritage.
