Lesson 3 你问我答
3.1 有用的词语 Useful terms
Do you know what we call the major components forming Chinese characters? Each Chinese character usually gives clues to its meaning and pronunciation. One major component is the semantic part or radical ( 部首 bùshǒu), and theother is known as the phonetic part or sound indicator ( 声旁 shengpáng).Chinese characters have changed significantly as they have evolved overthe centuries so that many no longer provide significant semantic or phoneticinformation. However, it is still helpful for learners to work out the meaning ofa character by studying its semantic component. Similarly, the phonetic partcan help learners memorize the pronunciation of a character.
