The folksongs and papercuts of the loess plateau in northern Shaanxi Province in Western China have evoked tremendous admiration in people who have heard them and seen them. These two popular folk arts are living manifestations of ancient dreams as well as real happenings in one of the oldest areas of China. In this book, we present some of the best examples of these papercuts in their original degign, each accompanied by a selection from the folksong that inspired it, along with the tune. This is followed by the complete lyrics of the folksongs in translation and in the original according to the way they are sung by local people.
