performance more vivid and lively. The third type is for animals or beasts. The most important one is the Monkey King. Generally the performer wears nothing but pants with yellow hair from fern roots stuck all over the body. After putting on the mask for the Monkey King, he vividly imitates monkeys'agile actions. As for the musical instrument, themaguai dance is usually accompanied by percussion instrument, including bronze-drums, big leatherdrums, small leather-drums, big gongs, small songs and cymbals. All through the performance, suona horns are played, which, however, is in a free way without much connection to the dancing actions, only serving the purpose of building up the atmosphere The mogwai dance features a primitive and simple style as well as boasts a strong ethnic flavor, whose most famous actions is squatting really low and holding it for long. To have legs bent and do squatting like a mogwai is the key gesture of the dance, which is continued all through the performance no matter the actions is to jump at the same spot or to take steps forwards. All in all the rhythm remains monotonous and steady, and so do the dancing actions, which usually have the weight center going down and therefore give the audience a feeling of sedateness. Such is also the characteristics of the Zhuang People.
