The lacquer tray was a kind oftableware for containing water or otheritems, with an inward retracting or flaredmouth and introverted belly. The lacquertrays came in many shapes, such asround, rectangular, square, octagonal, lotus leaf, plum blossom, oval, etc. Theearly lacquer trays were mainly wood-body lacquerware with a thick bodysurface. To the Warring States Period(475B.C.-221B.C.) and Han Dynasty(206B.C.-220A.D.), most of the lacquertrays were quite fine. In addition to thewood body, there also emerged a fabricbody with a thinner surface.
Lacquer cups were commonly usedfor drinking alcohol, mostly cylindricalin shape or slightly thinner at the lowerend. The lacquer cup was one of theearliest lacquerware to appear.
