Milestones were invented by the Romans to allow their armies to know how far they were from the next garrison. The Roman Mile was 1,000 paces comprised of two steps to a pace.Being a good Roman colony the British kept the system for over a thousand years but updated in the sixteenth century. The kilometre (1,000 metres) is a much more recent 1790 invention of the French, which explains why the British didn't adopt the kilometre and the French said 'non' to the mile.A kilometre is equivalent to 0.621 miles.A Chinese mile is 500 metres but road distances are always given in kilometres.
All of this is perhaps of passing interest because without doubt the greatest benefit the mile—marker gives is to improve travellers' morale through letting them know how far they have travelled and confirm that they are on the right road, heading in the right direction. So, when I was greeted early in the day with a great fanfare of supporters proclaiming 300 km, I found myself forgetting my loyalty to the British Mile and embraced this 'milestone'(of course 'Kilometres tone' would never catch on).
We took a break with the local Red Cross volunteers for pictures next to a field of date trees—dates are a local speciality of this area. They are smaller and sweeter than their rivals. We took pleasure in making it this far and managed to set aside that we might have another 1,300 km to go before we arrive in Hangzhou.
