Chinese for Science and Engineering is designed for first-year overseasundergraduate students studying in China or professional Chinese learners atthe advanced stage of pre-university education, and it is a special textbookfor pre-university education of overseas studentssponsored by Chinese government scholarship.

The textbook consists of 15 chapters and 60 texts. Each chapter containssix sections: warm-up, word learning, reading, listening and speaking, abilityexpansion, and word advancement. The reading section includes one article eachof intensive reading, through-reading and skimming, and the listening andspeaking section includes one article.

About the Author
Du Xiuping is the vice dean, professor anddoctoral director of the School of International Education of TianjinUniversity, and the leader of the cross-cultural education discipline of theSchool. He is mainly engaged in research in the fields of learning science,Chinese international education and intercultural education. He serves as thedirector of the Steering Committee of Pre-University Education Sponsored byChinese Government Scholarship, the vice president of Tianjin ChineseInternational Education Research Association and other social part-time jobs.He has published more than 40 academic papers. The Research onPre-University Foreigners Studying in China Sponsored by Chinese GovernmentScholarship, edited by him, won the second prize of the Fifteenth SocialScience Outstanding Achievement Award of Tianjin, and the Illustrated HigherEducation System of Each Country, edited by him, won the second prize ofthe Seventeenth Social Science Outstanding Achievement Award of Tianjin.
YinXiaojing is the head of the Department of Chinese Language Education at theSchool of International Education of Tianjin University, a postgraduatesupervisor and a full-time teacher of Chinese as a foreign language. Since2001, she has been engaged in teaching and researching Chinese as a foreignlanguage, and has presided over and participated in a number of researchprojects related to teaching. She has co-edited four Chinese as a ForeignLanguage textbooks and one cultural textbook. She is also an expert in theconstruction of the online series of courses of “China Panorama”. Her Englishcourse “Chinese Culture” for international students was awarded the title of “TianjinBrand Course of English Teaching for Overseas Chinese Students”. Moreover, sheis the judge of the Third, Fourth and Fifth National Postgraduate ChineseEducation Microcourse Competition.

This book is a special textbook forpre-university education of overseas students sponsored by Chinese governmentscholarship, and it is one of the series of Starting Line—A Series of “Chinese +” Textbooks, which has the following features:

(1) Bridged byvocabulary. Suggestion
It is suggested that students who have reached theLevel 2 of Chinese for Science and Engineering of the Standards for Pre-UniversityEducation in China can study the whole content in 64 hours, and studentswho have reached the Level 3 of that can study the whole content in 48 hours.Institutions can also determine the number of teaching hours according to theactual situation of students’ level and curriculum settings, and it isrecommended that the teaching hours of each chapter should be limited to 6hours.
